Energiron DRI plants are hybrid-ready by design in keeping with market expectations for carbon neutralilty.

Energiron zero-reformer technology allows the maximum production flexibility in terms of reduction agent to be possibly used in the process, such as natural gas, coke oven gas and/or hydrogen.

DRI pellets delivered by Energiron plants allow up to 96% metallization and variable carbon-content ranging from 0.5% with extensive use of hydrogen, and up 4.5% using 100% natural gas.

Energiron plants are available with Hytemp® pneumatic transport systems feeding electric arc furnaces with hot DRI up to 600 °C, ensuring an extremely energy-efficient total process for production of liquid steel starting from pellets, which has proven, reliable and safe operation.

Standard Energiron plants have carbon-capture units, taking CO2 from the process and making it available for other applications, further reducing the overall plant carbon emissions and providing an additional revenue stream for the plant operations. Such an arrangement makes it possible to produce green steel even before having the availability of hydrogen.

The Energiron technology has the possibility to increase the feed of hydrogen, produced externally, without modifying the scheme of the plant, being thus ready to move to completely clean iron production without the need of changes to the plant.

21 installations are in operation and 12 are under supply, as the result of 8 orders received during the last two years.

Recently, Salzgitter Flachstahl in Germany, Tata Steel in The Netherlands and Vulcan Green Steel in Oman relied on the Energiron Alliance for their investments in direct reduction plants.

During 2023 and 2024, two industrial-scale plants making use of hydrogen started operation in China at HBZX High Tech (HBIS), and at Baosteel Zhanjiang.

Following the successful operation of the full-hydrogen pilot plant at HYBRIT in Sweden, LKAB has ordered an Energiron 100% hydrogen-based DRI plant to produce 1.35 Mtpy of fossil-free DRI.

Energiron is the DRI technology jointly developed by Tenova and Danieli.
