Jindal Steel achieves production milestones with Danieli casting technology

Jindal Steel, a prominent leader in India’s steel, power, mining, and infrastructure sectors, has recorded exceptional performance results with its two twin slab casters, Danieli supplied in Angul, India. These results have exceeded guaranteed performance benchmarks, confirming the high productivity, efficiency, and operational reliability of the installation.

The performance was realized using Danieli twin-strand slab casting technology, which is engineered to ensure stable operation and high-quality production across a diverse range of steel grades. The two twin-slab casters at Steel Meltshop #2 are designed for a capacity of 7.2 Mtpy, transforming liquid steel into slabs with thicknesses of 180, 220, and 260 mm, widths from 800 to 1,700 mm, and lengths ranging from 5.5 to 12 meters. The advanced technological packages installed in the casters that enhance process control, ensure consistent slab quality and reliable operational stability.

During the optimization phase, the plant surpassed its guaranteed performance, achieving maximum casting speeds of 2.75 m/min for low-carbon grades, 2.0 m/min for medium-carbon grades, and 1.45 m/min for peritectic steel grades.

The fast ramp-up achieved a maximum of 47 heats in a single tundish casted over 33 hours, within 45 days of hot test. 

The maximum throughput achieved was 10.5 t/min, with low carbon steel grades.

The re-stranding time also surpassed the guaranteed value of 68 minutes achieving in 64 minutes, thereby increasing production time and productivity.

Furthermore, the facility successfully reached a consistent output of up to 40 heats per day, leading to significant gains in productivity and product quality.

These milestones are the result of close cooperation between the Jindal Steel and Danieli teams. By continuously refining process parameters, enhancing equipment reliability, and reducing defects, the partnership ensures stable and repeatable performance.
