Sidersa orders Danieli MIDA green steel minimill to compete in long products

Argentinian Sidersa will be the first steelmaker to operate a Danieli MIDA QLP-DUE minimill in Latin America. The new minimill will be installed in San Nicolás de los Arroyos, Buenos Aires province.

It will competitively produce 360,000 tpy of quality straight bars in bundles and wirerod, processing local scrap into new products, mainly for local construction applications and export.

The new MIDA minimill will operate Danieli-patented technologies like Digimelter (endless scrap charge, Q-One power feeder and Q-Melt process control suite), Digirefiner (LF with Q-One power feeder), a single-strand Octocaster and a rolling mill to produce wirerod, and straight bars finished in a Direct Rolling Bundling station.

Endless charging makes possible scrap preheating that reduces melting energy requirements and minimizes carbon and NOx emissions, that, together with the absence of the billet re-heating ensures a green steel production.

Hybrid-ready by design, Q-One optimizes the performances of the furnace, allows the direct use of renewable energy, and operates with negligible impact on the power grid.

Danieli Octocaster allows high-speed, quality production and endless casting-rolling for maximum production efficiency, lowest energy consumption and emissions.

The single-strand Octocaster will feed –with 154-mm octagon-shape endless billets– a 20 housingless-stand bar mill and a wirerod line equipped with an 8-pass Fast-Finishing Block.

The Direct Rolling Bundling station will allow high-speed delivery of the bars into the cooling bed in a narrow, optimized space. In-line quenching will ensure quality finished rolled products.

Danieli will also supply auxiliary equipment such as fume and water treatment plants, as well as the process and auxiliary cranes servicing the complete plant.

The new MIDA QLP-DUE minimill will be run by Danieli Automation process control systems.

The plant is scheduled to start-up in the first half of 2028.

The Sidersa plant will be the first, new, complete minimill built in Argentina in the last 50 years.
