Marcegaglia awards Danieli contract for low-carbon steelmaking and flat rolling project in Fos-sur-Mer
Project Mistral to strengthen supply chain integration and support decarbonization
Marcegaglia and Danieli have signed an agreement for the implementation of a new steelmaking and flat rolling facility in Fos-sur-Mer, France.
The new plant will produce more than 2 Mtpy of liquid steel and up to 3 Mtpy of stainless and carbon steel hot-rolled coils, covering around 35% of Marcegaglia Group’s total coil and slab demand. Production will primarily supply the Group’s Italian downstream facilities for a wide range of applications.
The plant will include a modern electric arc furnace equipped with state-of-the-art technology, a single-strand continuous slab caster for thick slabs, and a conventional hot-strip mill. This configuration will ensure production flexibility, stable operations, and consistent product quality across a broad range of flat steel grades.
The project is designed with a strong focus on sustainability. Engineered in compliance with the most stringent European environmental and safety standards, the Fos-sur-Mer complex will leverage advanced automation systems, optimized resource utilization, and energy-efficient technologies.
The use of scrap, low-carbon HBI, and nuclear and renewable energy sources will enable up to 80% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions compared to traditional steelmaking routes.
The project supports Marcegaglia’s objective of strengthening its competitive positioning in the European flat steel market through sustainable, capital‑efficient growth, while contributing to Danieli’s continued commitment to enabling the steel industry’s green transition.
The final investment decision is expected latest by the end of 2026, according to the completion of the permitting process and other conditions currently, in advanced status of negotiation with the relevant French institutions.
