A new contract for Danieli Exstream II accelerated cooling system

Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) ordered the Danieli accelerated cooling system to upgrade its plate mill in Bhilai, India, to enhance the operational efficiency and expand the range of the grades produced, and meet the growing demand for high-quality steel in India and beyond.

The new, patented Danieli accelerated cooling system –Exstream II– consists of medium-pressure water headers dynamically controlled by a Danieli Automation cooling model. It is engineered to significantly optimize the cooling process for steel products, leading to improved metallurgical properties, reduced alloy use, and enhanced energy efficiency.

The use of Exstream II makes it possible to attain superior mechanical properties and finer microstructure. Improved energy efficiency is achieved by avoiding additional off-line thermal treatment processes that require re-heating after the rolling process.

Moreover, a more sustainable steel production process is accomplished through an optimized utilization of resources, meaning use of less additives.

Exstream II will be in full operation by end of 2026, ensuring a seamless integration of the new system.

In the same plate mill of SAIL Bhilai, Danieli already provided several upgrade packages including L1 and L2 automation and mechanical retrofit, and new rocking side trimming shear.

 
Another Exstream II system is being supplied in India by Danieli, for the Steckel mill of JSPL in Raigarh and will be commissioned in the last quarter of 2025.
