ArcelorMittal Sestao contracts Danieli for turnkey meltshop upgrade

New dedusting system for productivity increase and VD for clean steel production

As part of the “Sestao 1.6” new investment programs aiming for zero-carbon emissions, capacity increase, and expanded product portfolio, ArcelorMittal Sestao has selected Danieli for the turnkey supply of a new fume-treatment plant and vacuum degasser for its Vizcaya plant, Basque Country, in Spain.

The installation of a new fume-treatment plant serving the existing EAF#1 will allow AM Sestao to fully exploit the potential of the two existing EAFs and increase productivity up to 1.6 Mtpy. The new FTP plant will filter EAF fumes with dust emission at the stack of less than 3 mg/Nm3. A refractory-free quenching tower, Danieli-patented plug & play modular filter, and ID fans with variable-frequency drives will characterize the dedusting system.


A new VD station featuring mechanical dry vacuum pumps will enable production of clean steel with precise chemical control, and low nitrogen and hydrogen content, making possible the expansion of the steel-grade portfolio at the flat-product facility of AM Sestao.

 

Thanks to a compact and optimized layout, the vacuum degasser will be installed in an extension of the existing meltshop bay, ensuring efficient ladle and process logistics from any melting unit, and enhancing operational safety.

Q-AFS Automatic Foaming Slag Control System mounted on the vacuum cover to optimize pump-down time, and Q-Degas system for real-time process control and quality assurance will characterize the VD station.

 

New Danieli Automation electrical and process control systems will be integrated within the existing meltshop E&A system.

 

The new equipment is scheduled to be in operation starting from August 2026.
