Megasa awards Danieli rolling-mill modernization project at SN Seixal, Portugal

Spanish steel group Megasa Siderúrgica has signed a new contract with Danieli for the modernization of the 1-Mtpy bar, spooler and wire rod rolling mill at Siderúrgica Nacional (SN) Seixal, in Portugal.

The first intervention of the project includes the installation of a Danieli Q-HEAT® system comprising three induction coils, for a total installed power of 6 MW. The system will compensate for the temperature drop occurring during billet transfer from the reheating furnace to the first rolling stand, particularly during welding operations, while also equalizing temperature along the billet length to ensure uniform product quality and mechanical properties.

As part of the modernization program, the intermediate mill area will be rearranged and upgraded to simplify the roll pass design, streamline the production process, optimize the layout and further enhance operational safety. Danieli will supply four new cantilever ESS rolling stands for this section of the mill.

Danieli Automation will provide a new Level 2 process control system, replacing the existing platform. The upgraded automation solution will improve material tracking throughout the entire production route, from billet loading through to evacuation of finished products on the various finishing lines, supporting enhanced process control and production management.

Start-up of the upgraded facilities is scheduled for Q3 2027.

The trust and partnership between the Spanish steel group MEGASA Siderúrgica and Danieli have spanned more than five decades, with the SN Seixal plant playing a central role in this long-standing relationship.
