Danieli with its QSP® (Quality Strip Production) technology has been pioneering the development of vertical curved design for Thin Slab Casters.

This allowed QSP® plants to compete with the conventional slab casters in meeting the market demand for higher-productivity plants.

Fluid dynamics is a complex phenomenon that results from different physical factors, applied here in order to guarantee final product quality and process stability at high throughputs. Each factor has to be addressed, and controlled toward a specific function.

Danieli Rotelec has successfully addressed this issue with the introduction of Multi-Mode Electro Magnetic Brake (MM®-EMB), a unique and patented solution able to follow dynamically casting working condition, optimizing in real time mould fluid dynamics through three different functions:

  • Braking
  • Damping
  • Stabilizing

The MM-EMB braking function continuously adjusts the direction and the velocity of the liquid steel flow inside the mould to ensure its optimal conditions and to control the meniscus temperature. Meniscus stability is then addressed by suppressing meniscus waves and vortexing through the MM-EMB damping function, while the MM-EMB stabilizing function controls the flow at SEN ports to avoid bias flow between right and left sides.

The system is designed to consist of a five independent poles design that target specific areas in the mould. The poles’ electromagnetic fields vary in intensity and direction by means of related electrical equipment controlled by Danieli Rotelec's flow pattern and control automation.

The result is a highly stable liquid steel level and optimal mould flow conditions, even at the highest casting speed. This ensures homogenous mould lubrication and temperature distribution, to deliver higher quality, production and plant reliability.
