K-SPOOL
The heaviest, the fastest, the winning combination to produce 8 ton spooled coil while rolling in endless mode
The Spooling process is the latest technological innovation for twist-free winding of round, square and flat bars into high-quality and ultra-compact heavy-weight coils developed by Danieli Morgårdshammar.
It is suitable and designed for a wide application field, in terms of product type and size range (round, square & flat bars) and steel grades, depending on requirements:
- 8 to 32 mm water-quenched or vanadium-alloyed deformed bars;
- 8 to 32 mm plain bars;
- Operative rolling speed up to 35 m/s (40 m/s design speed);
- Coil weight up to 8.0 t;
- Spooled coil featuring fixed standard height and inner diameter; outer diameter varies depending on coil weight.
- 14 to 50 mm hexagons;
- 12 to 50 mm square bars
- Flats from 20 to 70 mm, with thickness up to 20 mm.
The process is applicable to all common steel grades to be used in their “as rolled” condition, as well as to quality steels that, depending on their final utilization, may undergo mechanical descaling.
The on-line bar temperature control and conveying system, installed between the finishing mill and the spooling area is made up of a set of water boxes and conveying sections for on-line temperature adjustment and control, in relation to product size and material grade.
A bar feeding system is implemented for regular and homogeneous rolled stock distribution on the spooler drum for perfect coil formation.
Two spooling units operate in alternation, one for bar winding, the other for coil unloading and vice-versa. Each unit is made up of a rotating drum and a bar head clamping/ guiding device to start the winding cycle.
The drum is fitted with expansion sectors to enable coil extraction.
The spooled coil finishing area, where coils are automatically strapped in 4 points, weighed and conveyed to the collection station.
The entire operation is governed by an intelligent control system particularly dedicated to bar temperature control and for supervising bar regular winding on the spooler drum.
Danieli K-Spool technology is unanimously recognized as unparalleled in terms of mechanical consistency and twist-free tendency, which are ultimately the aspects that mean the most for downstream processors.
There is no doubt that whoever has installed a Daniel K-Spool line has soon reached a prominent standing in its reference market, as proven by a rich array of case histories - 60 units installed worldwide!
- Higher efficiency, productivity and better material yield in the downstream cold processing lines;
- High filling factor (0.9 against 0.25 of Garret coiler and 0.1 of wire rod coil);
- Twist-free bar winding into up to ultra-high-weight, ultra-compact coil;
- If combined with endless rolling mode system, the Spooler line enables production of “customized-weight” coils up to 8.0 t, even starting from very low-weight billets;
- Safe uncoiling for further cold processing, avoiding any intermediate process step;
- Up to 18 €/t cost saving avoiding traditional “off-line” intermediate processes;
- Up to 22-24 €/ton transformation cost savings by joint operation with the endless rolling mode system;
- High finishing speed, resulting in high productivity, also with the smallest bar sizes;
- ROI: 12 to 18 months for a 0.5 Mtpy plant producing 8- to 32-mm-dia deformed bars in Europe.
